The End of the World

Okay, or the end of this blog, anyway. Unless we find a need to resurrect this, I am making it public in case anyone can find anything useful or entertaining here.

If you are here because the blog just popped up on Blogger or linked here from another blog, feel free to wander and take a look around, poke into the corners, see what you think. Otherwise, there are no plans at the moment to make this an active blog again unless the need arises. Thanks for dropping by!

War. War Never Changes. Or Could It?

As we've been brushing off the Vault dust of our new batch of heroes, I have been looking toward the day when we actually have combat with a foe that isn't stationary.  I've assumed that we would need to do battle mats and grids and measure things out in 5' squares.  Minis or tokens would be produced, and then we'd be faced with a decision I've waffled over in my head for a while--do we go with the rules-heavy but more flexible 3.x sort of combat or with the more computer-influenced sexy but ultimately more confining combat style of 4e?  There are strong pros and cons either way, but I haven't been at all satisfied with either thought.  Now, it's true that FONY is already a Frankensteined rule set, and I could simply develop a new combat system on the fly, using the base I've already laid out, but that is a tremendous amount of work I simply don't have the time to do.

However, I ran across another option in the project of an old friend.  That project is called Final Fantasy Zero (FFZ), and it has a LOT of very cool ideas in it.  However, for this post, the cool idea du jour concerns combat.  In a nutshell, combat is very abstracted in FFZ.  Your relative location is one of two choices, reflecting classic FF (and other CRPG) sensibilities.  You are either in the "front row" or the "back row."  These describe, not positioning, but overall tactics.  If you are in the "front row," you are in the enemies' collective face, and you get a bonus to attack.  If you are in the "back row," you are fighting from range, watching yourself, trying to not allow the enemy to get close, so you get a bonus to defense.

What this means is that specific positioning is unimportant, and so maps are not crucial to running combat (though still good so you know what's around).  It would take a little adjustment on this side of the GM screen, but I think it would be very doable, and in keeping with the sort of flow I'd like to see in our game.  However, it isn't all about me, of course!  If battle maps and movement and the like seem attractive to everyone, I'm more than happy to do that.

As always, sound off in the comments, or make a post! :D

Leaning Towards...

...but nothing is decided yet.  Ms. Meg?

And what would be the consensus on another addition?  Not sure where she would sit (though I can retire to my DM chair [finally] if need be), but Rese has expressed interest in joining us.  She's a vegetarian, too, so there would be two people to eat the sans carne evening offerings...

Scheduling

Okay, I am jonesing to have everyone over, but I don't know everyone's schedules.  For us, Thursday and Saturday nights are definitely out (kids), and Fridays probably, too (need a chance to decompress after the long school/work week).  Haven't really talked specifically about this with B, but those two nights for sure we can't.

I've also been thinking about the fact that our WoW-D&D game was only intended to be a short-term thing, and I am at an utter loss as to what to do from here. I'd like us, as a group, to figure out what kind of game we would all like to play, what kind of setting, characters, general goals (short- and long-term) and so on, and no "I'm fine with anything." :p  I'm open to continuing our WoW game, I'm leaning toward returning to New York, but there are plenty of other options we can discuss, too, including using 3.5/Pathfinder rules.

Sound off in the comments. :D

Hello?

Ok ya'll,

We haven't had any activity on this thing in a while. We need to reactivate the info tree! (not that I ever check the info tree anyway...)

Here is my thought process right now,
When I get back to town those of us who can make it get back together and have a shin-dig for the New Year!!!

Does that sound copecetic (yes i know it is spelled wrong) with everyone?

Peace
